Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: 1.03 ‘The Trial of Sabrina Spellman’

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Episode 1.03

Sabrina finds herself in trouble after running away from her Dark Baptism and not pledging herself to the Dark Lord. Unfortunately, this has repercussions and herself, along with her aunties, must face a trial in order to determine what happens with this little witch.

During the previous episode, Father Blackwood met with Sabrina to help ease her worries, but it only made her question things further. She also found herself teaming up with the Weird Sisters to get revenge on some of Baxter High’s jocks, and it went a little too dark for her liking. After spending one last night with her mortal friends for her sixteenth birthday and Halloween, Sabrina faced her Dark Baptism, but fled instead and chose another path for herself.

Trouble Brews

When Principal Hawthorne (Bronson Pinchot) bans a book, the girls of WICCA head to the library in search of a few other books and they discover that there are many books missing. All riled up, the girls of WICCA hand out a list of banned books to the school when Principal Hawthorne says they are now reconsidering Roz’s (Jaz Sinclair) banned book.

Meanwhile, Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) has received an Infernal Summons, which is because she made a promise to sign the Dark Lord’s Book of the Beast. She will be judged in front of the entire coven, along with Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto) who have been temporarily stripped of their powers and will begin to age rapidly. Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) tells her she needs to reach out to Daniel Webster (John Rubinstein) who specialises in witch law.

Sabrina goes to visit Daniel and explains her case, but he doesn’t practice anymore and sends her on her way. Later on, the court proceedings begin when Mr Webster arrives and during an intermission, Sabrina learns Mr Webster knew her father who actually taught him witch law. Back in session, Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle) presents the Book of the Beast, which contains Sabrina’s name as it was written shortly after she was born. According to Zelda, Sabrina’s father promised her soul in exchange for marrying Sabrina’s mother.

As for the other Spellman family member, Ambrose has the iguana and he’s hoping the familiar will talk and reveal what led to the boy’s death. At the wake, Ambrose meets one of the deceased boy’s friends whose name is Luke (Darren Mann) and he knows that Connor always had the iguana with him, and he seems to have a magical little twinkle in his eye… Ambrose later receives a visit from Luke (side note: vampires are real in this world), who is actually a warlock too, and so they two boys dive straight for the bed. He wakes in the morning to Luke’s number, but the iguana is very much dead.

For our mortals, Harvey (Ross Lynch) talks to his brother Tommy (Justin Dobies) about getting a job at Dr Cerberus’ when his father overhears and says he can work in the mines instead. Harvey tells Sabrina he will be working in the mines, along with a story about hiding in the mines when he was younger and seeing a goat man who smelled of brimstone.

Spooks and Truth

Ms Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) casts a spell which freezes the school and lets Sabrina see the bloody girl who haunted Mr Webster. The girl leads her to a scrapbook of all the cases Webster won for the guilty. When Sabrina confronts Mr Webster, he says he signed a different book for the Dark Lord and began winning cases, which were the most depraved.

That night, Mr Webster demands a jury of mortals since Sabrina is half-mortal. However, Blackwood says she can either be tested in the water (literally sink or swim) or stripped in search of a witch’s mark. Blackwood later visits the Spellman’s to tell her she will be able visit her mortal friends yearly if she writes her name and begins at the Academy, but she won’t accept just yet.

In the forest, Sabrina asks Harvey to search her for a witch’s mark (or rather birthmark for this mortal’s understanding) and he’s clearly eager to search every inch of her. And, to make it fair, he takes his top off too and then searches her body causing quite the sensual scene. However, poor Harvey then heads to the mines with Tommy and immediately has flashbacks and begins to have a panic attack so Tommy tells him to go home. Harvey’s dad arrives home angry and Tommy says he won’t let Harvey waste his life down there.

Back at Baxter High, it seems the girls of WICCA can present their case…in three months. This upsets Roz immensely and she has to tell them she has myopic atrophy and she’ll be totally blind by then.

An Agreement

Sabrina confirms she doesn’t have a witch’s mark and she’ll submit to being examined. However, Hilda rushes into the court with a baby record book and she’s called to the stand. She provides a church of god baptismal certificate signed by Sabrina’s mother Diana and Hilda, and the document is dated prior to the Book of the Beast. This causes the Dark Lord to want to meet with Blackwood and Mr Webster privately. The verdict is that Sabrina continues her mortal life, but also attends the Academy and Black Mass. Due to Hilda’s actions, it seems she has been excommunicated from the Church of Night.

Blackwood and Ms Wardwell later meet and now that Sabrina is in the Academy, he hopes to bend her to his will. However, Wardwell says “real corruption is a thin, subtle blade.” In order to do so, they must hurt the ones Sabrina loves. Wardwell then starts a secret WICCA book club featuring banned titles only as a way in…

Overall Thoughts?

A steady episode with a touch of humour, especially with Hilda and Zelda worrying about their decaying bodies. Since Hilda and Sabrina’s mother Diana also had her baptised, there must be more to the story of her parents…only time will tell. As for Harvey seeing the Dark Lord, that will definitely come into play further on into the series that’s for sure. Hopefully we will learn more about Ms Wardwell, also known as Madam Satan, as she’s quite the interesting character, and also excellently played by Michelle Gomez.
