On nearly everyone’s lips and at the top of most of our social media feeds, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a six season (now seven season as of today!), action filled, cop comedy filled to the brim with amazing one liners, pop culture references and a stellar cast to top it all off. From the creators of Parks and Recreation (Michael Schur and Dan Goor), this series started out on Fox all the way back in 2013 and later moved to Netflix after being cancelled where it only grew in popularity.
For anyone that has seen it, it’s hard to imagine a life without the die-hard pop culture enthusiast Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg), his best pal and cuisine connoisseur Detective Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), witty and self-obsessed Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti), by the book and OCD NYPD detective Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), and an assortment of other characters all with their own zany quirks and tribulations.
When creator Mike Schur first pitched the show, there was a bidding war between the four major networks for it. In fact, when members were first approached about the project, knowing it was from the creators of Parks and Recreation was enough.
The series has gone on to win six awards such as the Shorty Awards for Best TV Show and the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, just to name a few.
So without further ado, if you haven’t watched the series yet, we’ve got six reasons why you should binge through the series and get up-to-date so you can watch the latest season!
- The One Liners
In order to get the best out of every scene, the cast film what is scripted a few times and then they improvise. The funniest take makes the final cut, so you can rest assured you’re only seeing the best and funniest lines. (It’s okay if you make one your Twitter bio, we’ve all done it).
- The Characters
We’ve all totally staged a yearly heist at our place of work in the hopes of being crowed champion (with a year of bragging rights) with schemes so intricate it involved a body double of your best friend. No? Well that’s okay because the characters that fill the 99th precinct have a plethora of relatable qualities that’ll have you laughing on the floor if not slightly concerned.
- The Hard Hitting Social Issues
Didn’t see that one coming did you? Although many of the episodes are light-hearted fun, they drop in some moments of discussion about important social issues such as sexism and racism in the workplace, sexuality and family relationships, just to name a few. However, it does this in a funny, yet respectful way that’s not so heavy it makes you sad and brooding for the rest of an afternoon, a balance many popular TV series struggle with.
- The inside jokes you will definitely tell your friends
Noice.
- The Cases
With all the one-liners and comedic relationships between the characters, we forget that they have actual jobs; detectives in New York City. Nearly every episode has at least one small case they have to solve and the season has a larger overarching one. Each of them is different from the last and will have you sitting on the edge of your seats shouting who you think the murderer is. Note to self: add a cork board and string to the shopping list.
- The Bingable-ness
Okay bingable-ness isn’t a word but if it was this show would have it. Fast paced and with comedic timing to boot, getting bored is out of the question. Three seasons in you’ll feel like no time has gone by at all and have loved every second of it.
