Isabel Ibañez delivers a captivating sequel with Where the Library Hides, the follow-up to What the River Knows. Set against the sweeping, mystical backdrop of late-1800s Egypt, this novel masterfully intertwines ancient magic, personal redemption, and the fall of once-powerful figures. Ibañez takes readers deeper into the world of Inez Olivera and Whitford Hayes, creating a thrilling conclusion that is every bit as enchanting as its predecessor. As a lover of Egyptian history, mythology, and romance, I couldn’t put this book down. From its rich atmosphere to its powerful emotional arcs, Where the Library Hides is a satisfying, high-stakes adventure.

Picking up where What the River Knows left off, Inez Olivera is still reeling from the treachery and near-death experiences she endured during her uncle’s archaeological expedition in Egypt. In this sequel, the tension is cranked up even higher as Inez’s quest for justice takes center stage. Her determination to hold those responsible for her family’s suffering accountable is palpable, but she faces immense obstacles—not the least of which is being a young, unmarried woman in a patriarchal society. As her uncle, Tío Ricardo, insists on sending her home to Argentina for her safety, Inez must find a way to stay and fight for what’s rightfully hers.

Enter Whitford Hayes, the enigmatic British soldier and aide-de-camp to her uncle. The romance between Inez and Whit simmers throughout the book, deepened by layers of loyalty, distrust, and profound emotional stakes. When Whit proposes marriage to help Inez gain control over her inheritance at the end of book one, the story starts in high gear at the beginning of the sequel. What starts as a matter of convenience quickly evolves into something far more complex. The nuanced romance between them is one of the highlights of the novel, offering moments of both heartbreak and hope. Ibañez doesn’t shy away from exploring the tension between love and deception, and watching Inez navigate her growing feelings for Whit while grappling with his secrets makes for a gripping emotional journey.

One of the aspects I loved most about this book is its sense of atmosphere. The world Ibañez creates is rich with the beauty and mystery of Egypt, infused with ancient magic and powerful forces lurking beneath the surface. From the sprawling deserts to the shadowy, magical libraries, the novel immerses you in a world that feels both haunting and full of possibility. Ibañez’s vivid descriptions transport you to another time and place, making every scene feel cinematic. As someone who’s always drawn to stories set in Egypt, Where the Library Hides satisfied that yearning for historical adventure and the allure of the unknown.

In addition to its evocative setting, the novel’s themes of redemption and betrayal are particularly compelling. We witness characters who fall from grace, their hidden motives revealed, while others rise as they confront their pasts. I loved how Ibañez gave room for personal growth—characters like Whit, who was initially shrouded in mystery, are fleshed out in a way that makes their redemption arcs satisfying. At the same time, some characters succumb to darker paths, their moral failures laid bare in a way that adds complexity to the story. The emotional stakes are high, and the resolution of these arcs feels well-earned.

The romantic ending was the cherry on top. After all the tension and uncertainty, seeing Inez and Whit’s relationship come to fruition was immensely satisfying. Their journey together is full of twists and betrayals, but the ending left me with a sense of closure and hope. The balance of romance and adventure kept me hooked until the very last page.

In conclusion, Where the Library Hides is a thrilling, atmospheric, and emotionally charged novel that delivers everything I loved about What the River Knows, and more. It’s a story of survival, love, and the pursuit of justice, all set against the backdrop of a magical, mysterious Egypt. Isabel Ibañez has crafted a world I would happily return to, and I can’t wait to see what she writes next.

Alexis Henderson’s An Academy for Liars dives headfirst into the dark academia genre, a setting rife with secret societies, cutthroat rivalries, and the tantalising allure of forbidden knowledge. On paper, this sounds like a winning combination for fans of gothic fantasy. However, while the novel offers an interesting premise and some truly intriguing moments, it doesn’t quite live up to its full potential.

The story centres on Lennon Carter, whose life is at a standstill when she receives an unexpected invitation to Drayton College—a magical university hidden in a pocket universe, offering training in the art of persuasion. Persuasion at Drayton isn’t just about convincing others; it’s about bending the very fabric of reality to one’s will. With the help of her enigmatic advisor, Dante Lowe, Lennon hones her abilities while uncovering the dark history of the institution and the true extent of her power.

Warning, there are mild spoilers ahead.

Let’s start with the positives. Henderson’s strength lies in creating a vivid and atmospheric setting. Drayton College, with its shadowy halls and air of mystery, is the quintessential backdrop for a dark academia novel. The secret societies, magic trials, and academic rivalries feel familiar but are executed well enough to keep readers engaged. The novel’s exploration of power—how it corrupts and what it demands in return—is compelling, particularly in a setting like Drayton where ambition knows no bounds.

The magic system in An Academy for Liars also stands out for its uniqueness. Persuasion as a form of magic, the ability to impose one’s will on others or even on the material world, is a fascinating concept. It raises some thought-provoking questions about control, manipulation, and morality. The moral dilemmas that arise from using such power give the novel a philosophical edge, forcing readers to reflect on the potential consequences of wielding such abilities.

That said, the book falters in a few significant ways. One of the most glaring issues is pacing. There are stretches where the story drags, bogged down by an overabundance of exposition or repetitive introspection from Lennon. This sluggish pacing is compounded by a romance subplot that, while promising at first, quickly loses its appeal. Lennon’s relationship with Dante, her brooding and morally ambiguous professor, never quite clicks. Their dynamic feels forced, and the emotional stakes of their romance are often undermined by awkward dialogue and unconvincing chemistry. In a novel that centres so much on relationships and power dynamics, this is a major drawback.

Furthermore, the secondary characters, while interesting, are often underutilised. Lennon’s classmates, who should play a significant role in her journey, are overshadowed by her intense focus on Dante and her personal struggles. This becomes particularly problematic during the novel’s climax, where Lennon’s peers are expected to rally around her in a way that feels unearned and hollow. Without more meaningful development of these relationships earlier in the story, the climax lacks the emotional weight it should have carried.

There’s also a lack of clarity in some of the novel’s key plot points. There were a few times when I was reading that I realised something had just dropped off and never returned. While the complexity of a novel is often a selling point, the plot points often didn’t fully connect which leaves the payoff unclear and unsatisfying.

In the end, An Academy for Liars feels like a missed opportunity. It’s an enjoyable read with a solid premise and some standout moments—particularly when it delves into the darker aspects of power and persuasion—but it ultimately falls short of delivering on its initial promise. Fans of dark academia may still find plenty to appreciate, but the uneven pacing, underwhelming romance, and lacklustre character development prevent it from reaching the heights of its genre.

Synopsis | Goodreads

A student will find that the hardest lessons sometimes come outside the classroom in this stunning dark academia novel from the acclaimed author of The Year of the Witching and House of Hunger.

Lennon Carter’s life is falling apart.

Then she gets a mysterious phone call inviting her to take the entrance exam for Drayton College, a school of magic hidden in a secret pocket of Savannah. Lennon has been chosen because—like everyone else at the school—she has the innate gift of persuasion, the ability to wield her will like a weapon, using it to control others and, in rare cases, matter itself.

After passing the test, Lennon begins to learn how to master her devastating and unsettling power. But despite persuasion’s heavy toll on her body and mind, she is wholly captivated by her studies, by Drayton’s lush, moss-draped campus, and by her brilliant classmates. But even more captivating is her charismatic adviser, Dante, who both intimidates and enthralls her.

As Lennon continues in her studies her control grows, and she starts to uncover more about the secret world she has entered into, including the disquieting history of Drayton college, and the way her mentor’s tragic and violent past intertwines with it. She is increasingly disturbed by what she learns. For it seems that the ultimate test is to embrace absolute power without succumbing to corruption . . . and it’s a test she’s terrified she is going to fail.

Lana Harper’s Rise and Divine brings a bittersweet conclusion to the Witches of Thistle Grove series. With its mix of enchanting queer romance, deep emotional themes, and a vibrant magical world, this final installment encapsulates what fans have loved about the series while also presenting some new challenges.

The story revolves around Dasha Avramov, who belongs to two of Thistle Grove’s founding witch families and holds the unique, darkly fascinating power of a devil eater. As the town gears up for the Cavalcade—a month-long festival that honours the founding families every two decades—Dasha faces not only the responsibilities of organising the event but also the personal demons of grief and regret. Harper’s signature immersive prose beautifully brings to life both the festive atmosphere of Thistle Grove and the sombre, otherworldly realms Dasha navigates.

The novel is as much about Dasha’s personal journey as it is about the external threats to Thistle Grove. Harper does a great job, as always, exploring the heavy themes of grief, depression, and suicidal ideation through Dasha’s struggles. This book isn’t just about romance or magic; it delves into how Dasha copes with the loss of her parents and the guilt she carries from her previous failed relationships, particularly with Ivy Thorn. The rawness of Dasha’s emotions makes her a compelling protagonist, one whose journey is as much about self-healing as it is about saving her town.

The relationship between Dasha and Ivy is a central thread, and while their romance is compelling, it’s not without its flaws. Some readers might find their reconciliation a bit too quick and convenient, especially considering the depth of their past hurts. However, their chemistry is undeniable, and Harper succeeds in portraying the push-and-pull of their dynamic with tenderness and sincerity. Ivy, grounded in her life magic and steady love, serves as the perfect counterbalance to Dasha’s turbulent emotions. Their relationship, though not as dramatically tense as in previous books, still offers a satisfying emotional journey, showcasing a love that endures despite immense challenges.

While Rise and Divine is undeniably a romance like the rest of the series, it also has a strong plotline involving a dark magical threat to Thistle Grove. The mystery of the demon haunting the Cavalcade adds an intriguing layer to the story, though some readers might find the resolution a bit predictable. Still, the magical elements, from the devil-eating abilities to the richly described celebrations, keep the narrative engaging and add depth to the world of Thistle Grove.

For those who have been following the series, the return of familiar characters is a welcome treat, though there’s a sense that some of them don’t get the spotlight they deserve. The book is clearly focused on Dasha and Ivy, which means that other beloved characters and storylines take a backseat. This might be disappointing for fans hoping for a more ensemble-focused finale. However, the glimpses we do get of the broader Thistle Grove community remind us of the intricate world Harper has built over the series, and it’s heartwarming to see how much the town and its residents have evolved.

In terms of pacing, the book starts a bit slow but picks up as the plot unfolds. Harper’s ability to blend magical lore with the characters’ personal struggles shines through, making Rise and Divine an emotionally resonant read despite its darker themes. The climax, involving the confrontation with the demon and Dasha’s ultimate decisions, carries the weight of the entire series and provides a satisfying conclusion to the overarching narrative.

That said, Rise and Divine might not be everyone’s favourite installment in the series. Its heavier focus on grief and inner turmoil, combined with the slightly predictable mystery and the quick reconciliation between Dasha and Ivy, could leave some readers feeling it doesn’t quite reach the heights of earlier books. However, it’s still a compelling, easy, and entertaining read that wraps up the series with heart and poignancy.

For fans of the series, Rise and Divine offers a fitting, and bittersweet, farewell to Thistle Grove, even if it leaves them wishing for more stories from this magical world.

Rise and Divine is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore.

A magical romantic comedy sparkling with spells and witchcraft.

To save both her town and the woman who loves her against all odds, a witch haunted by loss must reckon with her turbulent past.

Even in a family of chaotic necromancers, Daria ‘Dasha’ Avramov has always been an outlier. An event planner at the Arcane Emporium occult megastore, Dasha is also a devil eater: a rare witch with a natural affinity for banishing demons and traversing the veil.

Still grieving the loss of her parents and plagued by a dangerous obsession with what lies beyond the other side of the veil, Dasha is both fiery and guarded, an expert at dodging commitment. Her one real regret is a devastating breakup with Ivy Thorn.

When they are forced to work together to plan a festival, Dasha hopes that sparks might fly once again. But as they confront the fault lines and passion lingering between them, Dasha and Ivy must also stand against an otherworldly threat unlike anything Thistle Grove has faced before.

In the sequel to Threadneedle, Shadowstitch weaves a captivating tale of cursed love, witchcraft, and coming-of-age, set against the atmospheric backdrop of London. The story follows Anna, haunted by her aunt’s death and living in fear of a family curse destined to pit her against her sister over the same boy. Amidst this turmoil, a witch hunt sweeps across London, adding a layer of madness to the mix.

Cari Thomas’s banter and sharp one-liners perfectly capture the essence of teenage British humour, creating a vivid portrayal of English schools, London’s landscape, and a world gripped by conspiracy theories, fuelled by the internet. The combination of these elements makes for a spellbinding read.

Effie, a complex and manipulative character, brings both strength and trouble to the coven. She’s confident and well-connected but often leads the group into conflicts. The coven’s dynamic, enhanced by Thomas’s breezy dialogue, showcases how well the characters work together despite their differences.

The Christmas chapters evoke a warm, nostalgic feeling reminiscent of the Weasleys from Harry Potter, and the gardening magic is a delightful touch. Bertie, in particular, stands out as a character worthy of her own book. It was actually a nice reprieve from the tension and overall darkness of the book, and part of me wishes there were more to the Christmas chapters.

The novel introduces dark themes relevant to our current reality, though it occasionally diverts from the main plot of the curse. This book felt…long compared to Threadneedle. It was almost like much of it could have been tightened. I’m not sure if this is because the book is to be a trilogy and has fallen victim to a murky middle, or just poor editing. This might have been more streamlined as a duology, but the full judgment awaits the release of the third book.

One of the standout aspects is the protagonist, Anna, who grows significantly throughout the story. She is a relatable character, cautious yet determined to do good and save those she loves. Her journey of self-discovery and embracing her power is compelling and heartwarming.

The book ends on a cliffhanger, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the next installment. While the author’s careful crafting of each chapter is commendable, the wait for the finale will be a challenging one for fans as the second book wasn’t as riveting as the first.

Shadowstitch is an immersive and engaging read, with well-developed characters, rich atmosphere, and a plot that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Despite its length, I will be counting down the days until the next release.

Shadowstitch is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other good book retailers, like your local bookstore.

Spoilers Ahead

Tensions in King’s Landing

King’s Landing is in turmoil. As to be expected, the first casualties in war are the smallfolk. They’re trapped within the city and starving. At the beginning of the episode, there’s an arrival of food on boats carrying the black and red banners of House Targaryen. In a plan hatched by

Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) sent boats of food to both aid and cause chaos amongst the smallfolk of King’s Landing.

Queen Dowager Alicent (Olivia Cooke) and her daughter are caught in the chaos at the Sept. As they’re rushed to their carriage by their knights, the smallfolk attack the knights and tensions rise.

Meanwhile, Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) is concocting his own plan for power. Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) isn’t the best at ruling, so Larys Strong, as the recently appointed Master of Whisperers, suggests the Prince Regent appoint his own hand (seems familiar, doesn’t it?). Yet, Aemond does the first smart thing all season and summons his grandfather, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). Yet, he still dismisses his mother from the Small Council.

Aemond also sets Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) marching toward Harrenhal after Jason Lannister summons Aemond and his dragon to assist in taking the stronghold. He then instructs the other Lannister twin to make an alliance with the Triarchy to try to get through the blockage.

He wraps all this up by visiting his injured brother. Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) has awoken, but still sleeps most of the day. Aemond presses on his wounds while demanding to know what his brother remembers. Aegon claims that he remembers nothing, but he’s not fooling anyone.

After Aemond leaves, Aegon is visited by Larys Strong. Strong encourages Aemond not to take the milk of the poppy because while it makes the pain go away, it will also muddle his mind. He tells the young king that while his wounds may heal, he will never be whole again. It’s a stark reminder of how severe Aegon’s injuries are from someone who has been considered a cripple his entire life. Larys reminds Aegon that his brother is vying for power and his life is in danger. While Larys only visited the King as he was once again passed over for Hand, it is an interesting new avenue of scheming we see happening.

Out in the castle yards, Ser Criston Cole and his knights prepare for the long journey to Harrenhal. Among them is Ser Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox), the eldest child of Otto Hightower. The arrogance he once had has been tempered by the brutal realities of war.

Alicent inquires about her youngest son, Daeron, who was sent to Old Town as Gwayne’s ward. Gwayne points out that she must know since they write letters to each other. She admits they rarely do anymore, causing Gwayne to soften.

“He’s stalwart,” Gwayne says. “Clever. As skilled with his lute as he is with his sword. And quite popular among the young ladies, I’d wager.” He pauses, thinking. “He’s kind,” he adds. Alicent looks both relieved and sorrowful. Gwayne also notes that it was good Alicent warded her youngest son as he points out that the Red Keep doesn’t foster kindness in young men, clearly unimpressed with his other nephews. “Was it the court or was it their mother?” Alicent wonders aloud, the weight of her mistakes evident.

Ser Cole exchanges a long, meaningful look with Alicent as he prepares to depart. Their last words were bitter, and there’s no telling if these lovers—bound more by hate than love—will see each other again. She gives him a slight nod, and he turns and rides off.

More Visions at Harrenhal

Daemon (Matt Smith) remains haunted by visions of his brother, King Viserys I (Paddy Considine). In these visions, we see that Daemon doesn’t crave the throne for power but for his brother’s love and approval.

Viserys, from the Iron Throne, accuses Daemon of once calling his son “Heir for a day,” a slight Daemon dismisses as ancient history. Viserys’s anger and rejection have consumed Daemon, driving his resentment towards Rhaenyra’s rise to power. Daemon attempts to flee the throne room, only to tumble before a bemused Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale), steward of Harrenhal, who humorously questions his state of mind. Daemon, suspecting treachery, threatens Strong, who remains unimpressed.

Storming out, Daemon heads to his dragon, Caraxes, but encounters Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) at the Godswood. She speaks of older, unseen powers and Daemon’s blindness caused by anger. When he laments Rhaenyra’s undesired crown, Alys suggests that those who don’t seek power might be the best rulers. He seeks her counsel on dealing with the Riverlords, who will only unite under Lord Tully. Daemon, finally admitting his need for help, receives Alys’s advice to wait, as the winds will soon shift.

Later, Daemon learns of Grover Tully’s death, orchestrated by Alys. Alone, he weeps—whether from relief or grief remains unclear.

Other Happenings

We can’t have a recap without mentioning the two biggest twists in the episode. First, Seasmoke claimed a new rider. While Rhaenyra tried to find her own rider for Seasmoke, which literally ended in flames, Seasmoke had other ideas. The dragon literally chased down Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty) to claim him.

Meanwhile, when Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) shares a vulnerable story with Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra rushes to the woman to comfort her, which transitions into a kiss. The two are interrupted by the announcement of Seasmoke’s new ride.

Conclusion

“Smallfolk” is a standout episode that encapsulates what makes House of the Dragon compelling. It weaves intricate political plots with heart-stopping action, all while maintaining a focus on the human cost of the Targaryen civil war. As the series progresses, the stakes are higher than ever, promising more thrilling episodes to come.

Scattered Thoughts

The episode’s pacing is superb, balancing high-stakes political drama with action-packed sequences.

Rhaena stumbling upon burnt grass, evidence of a dragon in the Vale, is the introduction book readers have been waiting for as we anticipate her claiming a dragon.

The fifth episode of the second season House of the Dragon traded the epic dragon battles of last week for dense, meaty politics and repositioning in the aftermath of Rhaenys (Eve Best) and her dragon Meleys’ tragic deaths, and King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) and his dragon Sunfyre’s severe injuries.

Spoilers Ahead

There’s a lot that happens in this episode. In fact, This episode was packed with so much information that it warranted multiple viewings and extensive note-taking. Rather than sticking to a chronological recap, let’s take a more thematic approach to unravel the intricacies of this dense hour of television.

King’s Landing

In King’s Landing, Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) and his army make a mistake that I believe will haunt them for the rest of this war. As they march home toward the Red Keep, they cart the lifeless head of the dragon Meleys through the streets. It’s meant to be seen as a trophy, but it just serves as proof to the smallfolk that dragons, and their riders, are not infallible.

Inside the Red Keep, the true cost of the battle becomes apparent. King Aegon II is found in a dire state, barely alive, his body charred and broken. The maesters work frantically to save him, while his younger brother, Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), watches with a smirk. Aemond’s ambition is clear as he suggests someone must rule in Aegon’s stead, eyeing the throne for himself.

Alicent (Olivia Cooke) visits Ser Criston Cole, now known as the Kingmaker, and learns of the brutal battle at Rook’s Rest. The subsequent Small Council meeting sees Alicent clashing with her son Aemond, whom she suspects of playing a role in Aegon’s injuries. The council debates the matter of succession, and despite Alicent’s objections, Aemond asserts his authority.

Alicent’s realisation that she has been sidelined is palpable, marking a significant shift in the power dynamics of King’s Landing.

Shadows Over Harrenhal

Meanwhile, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) is making his moves at the foreboding fortress of Harrenhal. Haunted by visions and influenced by the mysterious witch Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), Daemon’s ambition grows. Despite his efforts, the lords of the Riverlands remain defiant, challenging his authority and refusing to rally to his cause. This scene underscores Daemon’s struggle to consolidate power and the deep-seated resistance he faces.

Mourning at Driftmark

Across the sea at Driftmark, Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steven Toussaint) mourns the loss of his wife, Rhaenys. His granddaughter Baela (Bethany Antonia) visits him with a proposal from Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), asking him to serve as her Hand. Baela’s fierce determination and loyalty to Rhaenyra shine through as she urges her grandfather to rise above his grief and support their cause.

Rhaenyra’s Dilemma

Back at Dragonstone, Rhaenyra grapples with the realities of leadership and war. Her son Jace (Harry Collett) yearns to prove himself, but Rhaenyra’s protective instincts clash with his ambitions. The episode concludes with a pivotal discussion between Rhaenyra and Jace about the need for more dragons and riders. This conversation hints at the potential for new alliances and the desperate measures Rhaenyra must consider to secure her position.

Conclusion

Episode 5 of House of the Dragon masterfully balances political intrigue with personal stakes, setting the stage for the inevitable conflict. The shifting power dynamics, the deepening rifts within the Targaryen family, and the strategic moves by key players all contribute to a complex and engaging narrative.

Scattered Thoughts:

Alicent’s interactions with Criston Cole reveal her increasing desperation and the strain on their relationship.

The portrayal of Daemon’s ambition and the resistance he faces adds depth to his character arc.

Alicent is finally realising how terrible her son Aemond is.

A fake lake monster? Intriguing.

A real one? Deadly.

Nicole M. Wolverton’s The Misfortune of Lake Monsters delivers a thrilling tale that expertly blends elements of horror, romance, and coming-of-age drama. Wolverton has crafted a compelling story that grips the reader from start to finish.

The book centers on Lemon, a teenager in a small town who fakes cryptid sightings, only to come face-to-face with a real monster.

Lemon’s family has been perpetuating the myth of Old Lucy, a cryptid in Devil’s Elbow Lake, to attract tourists for years. However, Lemon’s life takes a terrifying turn when she witnesses a real monster emerge from the lake and kill her dog. As deaths and earthquakes plague the town, Lemon, along with her friends Troy and Darrin, sets out to stop the creature, risking her family’s legacy in the process.

I don’t necessarily read a lot of horror, but I couldn’t turn down a small town with a real monster. Wolverton captured the essence of a small town—with its cliques and gossip and drama—perfectly and interwove it with the pressure of family duty.

The first quarter of the book features Lemon going through the motions of her life, including her first run as “Old Lucy” to keep the excitement of the monster going and bolster tourism in town. But when the first sighting of the real monster hits, it does so with a splash (literally) and it’s a rollercoaster from there.

The characters are what will keep you reading. Lemon’s internal struggle with her family’s deception and her desire to pursue veterinary school adds depth to her character. The dynamic between Lemon and her friends, Troy and Darrin, is so authentic and genuine, it had me believing Wolverton actually knew these characters in real life. Their loyalty and determination in the face of danger, combined with their humorous and heartfelt interactions, create a strong emotional core for the story. The romantic tension between Lemon and Troy adds another layer of interest, while Darrin’s comedic relief balances the darker moments.

Wolverton’s writing is vivid and immersive, bringing Devil’s Elbow to life with its rustic charm and eerie atmosphere. The book explores themes of loss, love, and the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The tension between personal aspirations and familial obligations is viscerally portrayed through Lemon’s character. There were times where I felt like I was the one responsible for the family business because I was so connected to her struggle. The monstrous threat serves as a metaphor for the challenges and fears that accompany growing up, making the story resonate on a deeper level.

The Misfortune of Lake Monsters is a standout in the YA horror genre. Wolverton’s ability to create tension and develop her characters makes for a compelling read. The emotional depth of the story, combined with its thrilling plot, kept me engaged throughout. With its mix of suspense, humour, and heartfelt moments, this book is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Synopsis | Goodreads

When legends bite back…

Lemon Ziegler wants to escape rural Devil’s Elbow, Pennsylvania to attend college―but that’s impossible now that she’s expected to impersonate the town’s lake monster for the rest of her life. Her family has been secretly keeping the tradition of Old Lucy, the famed (and very fake) monster of Lake Lokakoma, alive for generations, all to keep the tourists coming. Without Lemon, the town dies, and she can’t disappoint her grandparents . . . or tell her best friends about any of it. That includes Troy Ramirez, who has been covertly in love with Lemon for years, afraid to ruin their friendship by confessing his feelings.

When a very real, and very hungry monster is discovered in the lake, secrets must fall by the wayside. Determined to stop the monster, Lemon and her best friends are the only thing standing between Devil’s Elbow and the monster out for blood.

With Sunday night’s episode of House of the Dragon, fans got their first real dragon battle of the Dance of Dragons—we’re not counting the tragic finale of Season 1 since that could never be considered a battle. This time, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his formidable dragon, Vhagar, take center stage once again, unleashing chaos and death in a scene that both aligns with and diverges from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Spoilers Ahead

The episode opens with tensions running high in King’s Landing, particularly for King Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney). During a Small Council meeting, Aegon is shocked to discover that Aemond and Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) have been orchestrating the war efforts behind his back. Enraged by this betrayal, Aegon attempts to assert his authority by ordering them to halt their plans to attack Rook’s Rest, preferring instead to focus on capturing Harrenhal.

However, Aemond dismisses his brother’s commands, informing him that the attack on Rook’s Rest is already underway. Speaking in Valyrian, Aemond’s fluency starkly contrasts with Aegon’s broken responses, highlighting the growing rift between the brothers.

Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) must deal with her own irritable council when she returns to Dragonstone. It seems everyone is angry with her unexplained absence, even more so when she tells them she went to King’s Landing.

Frustrated and humiliated, Aegon seeks solace from his mother, Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke). Instead of comforting him, Alicent delivers a harsh dose of reality, questioning his capability to rule. Her words cut deep, and Aegon is left to stew in his indignation. Despite his mother’s advice to do nothing, Aegon decides to take matters into his own hands, mounting his dragon Sunfyre and flying to Rook’s Rest to join the battle.

The Battle at Rook’s Rest

The highlight of the episode is undoubtedly the dragon battle at Rook’s Rest. Unlike the tragic death of Lucerys in Season 1, this scene is both epic and harrowing, staying true to Martin’s narrative while adding its own twists. Aegon, unaware of the trap laid by Aemond and Cole, arrives at the seaside keep, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation.

Rhaenys (Eve Best) arrives with her dragon Meleys, after volunteering to fight in the battle in the wake of learning of her husband’s bastard sons. Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) is devastated at the thought, but, with no other choices, allows her to go.

The battle is visually stunning, with Meleys and Sunfyre clashing in a fiery spectacle that leaves viewers on the edge of their seats. With the appearance of his brother Aemond, Aegon briefly looks like he thinks he’ll win. That is until Aemond turns Vhagar on his own brother, mortally wounding Sunfyre and causing both dragon and rider to fall from the sky.

On the ground, Cole panics in seeing his King fall from the sky while realizing his plan to lure a dragon in to the battle and take it out with a waiting Vhagar might have backfired on him.

Meanwhile, Rhaenys flies away. Then, by whatever madness drove her, she turns back into the fray. Meleys and Vhagar grapple, but Aemond ambushes Rhaenys, killing Meleys and causing them both to crash into the castle below.

Other Happenings

There were two other things that happened in this episode that can’t be ignored. First, Rhaenyra tells her son and heir, Jace, about the Song of Ice and Fire. Meanwhile, Daemon (Matt Smith) continues to be absorbed by visions at Harrenhal. The only question is if these visions will help or harm him.

Conclusion

Episode 4 of House of the Dragon delivers a compelling mix of political intrigue and explosive action. The rift between Aegon and Aemond deepens, setting the stage for further conflict within the Targaryen family. The battle at Rook’s Rest is a standout moment, showcasing the show’s ability to balance epic fantasy with deeply personal stakes. As the season progresses, the Dance of the Dragons promises to become even more intense and unpredictable.

Scattered Thoughts:

The exchange between Aegon and Alicent highlights the difference in parenting techniques between the once friend Alicent and Rhaenyra.

Alicent’s abortion of what is assumed to be Criston Cole’s child is a stark reminder of her attacks on Rhaenyra’s children.

Sunday night’s episode of House of the Dragon plunges us deeper into the tangled web of political intrigue and impending war. The episode opens with an age-old feud‑something that seems to be very common in the Game of Thrones world—between the Brackens and Blackwoods, two houses whose longstanding rivalry has now taken on new dimensions due to their allegiance to Rhaenyra and Aegon, respectively.

This post contains spoilers for “The Burning Mill.” You’ve been warned.

The opening scene, though short, effectively sets the tone for the rest of the episode. This conflict quickly escalates from heated words to a brutal offscreen battle, leaving the countryside littered with the corpses of both houses. The once peaceful field is now drenched in blood, signalling that the first real battle of the Dance of the Dragons has commenced, albeit offscreen. This choice to show the aftermath rather than the battle itself heightens the sense of impending doom.

Rhaenyra and Alicent Reunite

Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), determined to prevent further bloodshed, decides to confront Alicent (Olivia Cooke) face-to-face. With the help of Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno), the White Worm, she learns of the one place the Queen Dowager visits in solitude: The Great Sept. Disguising herself as a nun, Rhaenyra approaches Alicent in a scene that mirrors Rhaenyra and Alicent’s Season One scene in the Sept.

Rhaenyra is hoping cooling heads will prevail, but unsurprisingly, Alicent lets her pride get in the way.

The conversation between the two former friends takes a surprising turn when they discuss King Viserys I’s dying words. It becomes clear that he was referring to “the prince that was promised” and the Song of Ice and Fire, not Aegon. However, Alicent, despite being shaken by this revelation, chooses to keep the bed she’s made and insists that war is inevitable.

Daemon’s Strategic Move

Daemon’s (Matt Smith) arrival at Harrenhal and subsequent anticlimactic taking of the fortress is surprising. Daemon is used to running in and cutting off heads, but instead he’s met with Ser Simon Strong (Simon Russell Beale) who seems happy enough to hand over the fortress and pledge allegiance.

Daemon wants to house the army he plans to raise at the castle, recognising its strategic importance in the Riverlands.

In a surprising turn of events, Daemon has a vision in which a young Rhaenyra (Milly Alcock) is sewing on the head of the young Prince Jaehaerys. Following his vision, a witch tells Daemon “You will die in this castle.”

New Characters and Alliances

The episode also introduces new characters who are bound to play significant roles. Rhaenyra sends her youngest boys away with Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell), Daemon’s daughter, to the Vale, along with a clutch of unhatched dragon eggs. This gesture aims to mollify Rhaena, who feels left out without her own dragon, but also guarantees the survival of the dragons if things go south.

We meet Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox), Alicent’s brother, who joins Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) as he brings an army to Harrenhal. When Gwayne and his retainers try to head to a tavern, Cole intervenes in an open field. Which is when Baela (Bethany Antonia) and her dragon, Moondancer, spot them. She descends and the pair gallop for their lives, managing to make it to the cover of the trees before Moondancer burnt them to a crisp.

The first note of Dragonseeds—Targaryen or Valyrian bastards fathered in the Blackwater Bay region. Ulf White (Tom Bennett) claims to be a child of Baelor, making him Daemon’s brother. The other Dragonseeds who have been introduced but not yet confirmed. Then there’s a mention of Alicent’s youngest, Daeron, and his dragon Tessarion, who we’ve yet to see.

After naming Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) his Master of Whispers, Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) slinks off to a brothel with his lackeys turned Kingsguard. He stumbles, drunk, into where his brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) is laying on the lap of an older prostitute and proceeds to mock him. We can almost see the moment that Aemond goes from self-loathing to a desire for revenge. Then he stands up, completely nude, and leaves.

Until Next Week

The show continues to build towards the inevitable clash, with each character’s decisions shaping the course of the impending war. Tensions are high and set to boil over in the upcoming weeks.

Random Thoughts

While I appreciated the mention of the prophecy, it just made me remember how the end of Game of Thrones was mishandled, especially since their prophecy is playing such a large role in the Dance of Dragons.

Helaena is a better woman than I for the forgiveness she offers her mother.

Seasmoke has me questioning if Laenor has actually died, or the dragon smells war and has accepted its rider will never return.

I’m not impressed by the way the introduction of Dragonseeds was handled, but I’m excited to see where it takes us.

In true House of the Dragon fashion, Episode 2 of Season 2 continues with its signature blend of political manoeuvring and sudden, brutal violence. While last week’s premiere left us reeling from a particularly harrowing scene, this episode offers a different kind of tension with a gripping fight between two knights.

There are spoilers for “Rhaenyra the Cruel.” You’ve been warned.

Twin Against Twin

Let’s start with the climax of this episode, as it’s sure to be the most talked-about moment. The Cargyll twins, Arryk and Erryk, portrayed by real-life twins Luke and Elliot Tittensor, engage in a dramatic fight to the death. Their conflict stems from their loyalties to different queens, with Erryk aligning himself with Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Arryk remaining loyal to Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney). This fight is not only a showcase of superb casting but also a heart-wrenching depiction of divided loyalties and the personal costs of war.

The twins were once Kingsguard knights under King Viserys I (Paddy Considine). However, the coup at the end of last season split them apart. Disgusted by Aegon’s debauchery, Erryk pledges allegiance to Rhaenyra, while Arryk remains steadfast in his oath to protect the throne, regardless of the king’s flaws.

Lord Commander Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) is frustrated with himself for the fact that the young prince Jaehaerys was murdered under his watch and takes out his pettiness on Arryk, ordering him on a suicide mission to sneak into Dragonstone, impersonate his twin, and assassinate Rhaenyra. Arryk doesn’t want to go on the mission, recognizing it for the misstep it is, but Cole sends him anyway without consulting Aegon or the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans).

Arryk might have been successful if it wasn’t for the White Worm, Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) as she passes, noticing him. It’s not called out on screen, but I have to think she sounded the alarm.

While Arryk makes it to Rhaenyra’s bedchambers, he’s interrupted in his advance on the Queen by his twin. As the twin fight, it’s almost impossible to tell which twin is which, leaving those who rush in to help Rhaenyra unable to tell who they should assist. In the end, both brothers fall, with the latter asking for Rhaenyra’s forgiveness before falling on his sword. Watchers are still left wondering if it was Erryk asking for forgiveness for failing to protect his Queen or Arryk grieving the death of his brother.

Political Machinations and Personal Strife

The episode also delves into the ongoing political machinations in King’s Landing. Otto Hightower attempts to garner public sympathy and anger towards Rhaenyra by parading the body of the murdered prince Jaehaerys. His plan nearly succeeds until Aegon’s rash decision to execute the castle’s ratcatchers, including the notorious Cheese, undermines Otto’s efforts. This act of brutality sparks outrage and further complicates the political landscape.

In Dragonstone, tensions run high as Rhaenyra and Daemon (Matt Smith) grapple with their grief and anger. Rhaenyra is furious with Daemon for his involvement in the prince’s death, leading to a heated argument that highlights the strain on their relationship. Despite Daemon’s claim that it was a mistake and he did not call for the young boy’s death, Rhaenyra doesn’t trust him. Daemon’s subsequent departure to Harrenhal to raise an army sets the stage for further conflict.

New Faces and Ongoing Conflicts

Outside the royal courts, the episode introduces new characters and deepens the stories of existing ones. We see more of Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim) and his brother Addam (Clinton Liberty), as well as the struggles of blacksmith Hugh Hammer (Kieran Bew), who is facing dire straits with a sickly daughter. While it’s not clear exactly what roles these characters will play, I’m excited to see their part in the Dance of Dragons.

Until Next Week

In conclusion, Episode 2 of House of the Dragon Season 2 continues to build on the series’ strong foundation. While the characters may not evoke the same affection as those in Game of Thrones (bring back Tyrion), the show’s rich narrative and dramatic tension ensure it remains a compelling watch.

Random Thoughts

Harrenhal is spooky already and really plays into the rumours we heard about it in Game Of Thrones.

Otto Hightower always looks like he’s surrounded by a sea of idiots.

Daemon feels a little one-sided this season and I wish they’d add more of the depth of his character (particularly his grey nature) to the show.
