When San Diego Comic-Con 2019 started, it was revealed that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would come to an end with Season 7 being its last. This didn’t really come as a surprise because after Season 5 it was uncertain if the show will be renewed and Season 6 received less episodes.
The cast and crew have known about its cancellation for a while and Jeph Loeb promises that the series about “a group of characters who became family, became a family in real life” will wrap it up in a way that fans will be left satisfied. So for what could be their last time at Comic-Con, they had the opportunity to fill Hall H with fans for the first time.
While Season 7 will air in a year, we have three more episodes of Season 6 ahead of us, which includes a 2 hour season finale. The teaser for the upcoming episodes shows us that we will see another side of Sarge, or is he Coulson?
Like every year, the panel is led by Executive Vice President and Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb who called this panel a celebration and a thank you to the fans. During the panel, it focused more on the journey throughout the series, rather than what we can expect from the rest of season 6.
Season 1 is a magical place, says Clark Gregg, who is “grateful that this incredible journey happened”. He remembers that it was only possible because of the “Coulson Lives” movement the fans started, and Marvel has given that to all of us.
At this point, it seems that everyone starts to get teary as Chloe Bennet remembers her journey from being Skye the hacker to becoming Quake, a superhero, and how “frustrating” it was to shoot the transition. Ming-Na Wen is the first one to break out in tears and everyone knows that this is their last mission together. While we have a handful of episodes left of Season 6, the cast is currently shooting the very last episode now.
Henry Simmons reflects how his character has evolved from being a mechanic to helping out Fitz, and then to becoming a member of the main cast and the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He especially remembers the episode with the spies goodbye, in which Bobby and Hunter leave S.H.I.E.L.D. It was not only emotional for his character, but also to him because he is very close to both actors in real life.
One of the highlights of this panel was the chemistry between Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker, who in an interview before said that “it is fun to shoot with Elizabeth. I wish everyone has a Elizabeth in their lives”. True friendship.
Jeff Ward, who joined the cast in Season 5, tells the story of him being unexpectedly cast as FitzSimmons grandchild. He was initially cast for another role in which he would die quickly, but he was so good at his table read, that they got him a recurring role which later ended up as being a main cast member in Season 6. This also has something to do with the fans again because the fans absolutely love him! He fell in love with everyone on set and remarks that he’s grateful that this family has let him in.
Since there was not much time left towards the end, the fan questions turned into a speedy Q&A in which we got a little hint that we may not get a direct spin-off of the show, but we might get a comic book series about the adventures that have happened in space. We also still do not know how the Ghost Rider series, which will produced by Hulu, will connect to S.H.I.E.L.D if at all.
