New To Netflix: 13 Reasons Why Season 2

13 Reasons Why Season 2

After quite the controversial first season, Netflix is about to drop season 2 of 13 Reasons Why.

Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of Hannah’s death and the start of our characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery. Liberty High prepares to go on trial, but someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth surrounding Hannah’s death concealed. A series of ominous Polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up.

So what can we expect to see? A big part of the second season will be the trial with Hannah’s parents going up against the high school and many of the kids will be asked to testify, including Jessica. However, those who plan on testifying are receiving threats and warnings about what will happen to them if they reveal secrets.

If you’re really into the series, you can check out the Instagram accounts that have been made for each of the characters with each post that is made offers clues as to what will be happening.

The first season of 13 Reasons Why received a lot of criticism, with mental health and suicide prevention groups stating that the show managed to break many of the accepted rules for portraying suicide on-screen — such as featuring a graphic, prolonged scene of the main character’s death and showing the suicide as a force for positive change and catharsis in the narrative.

Creator Brian Yorkey talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the themes to be explored in Season 2.

“Recovery is a central theme for us,” he said. “So many of these kids had been through traumatic experiences, both due to Hannah’s death and also independent of that and just as a part of their lives, and we wanted to begin to see them start back on the road toward wellness and wholeness and see what that looks like in the sense that recovery is not a straight line, and it’s not a simple process. That’s a central theme of the season.”

Due to the launch of Season 2, new resources will be added to 13ReasonsWhy.info including an updated Discussion Guide and a new Discussion Series – a set of videos where cast address issues in the series including bullying, sexual assault and drug abuse. The series also plans another after-show, Beyond the Reasons, with the show’s actors, experts, and educators breaking down the series.

Season two stars Dylan Minnette, Katherine Langford, Brandon Flynn, Justin Prentice, Derek, Luke, Christian Navarro, Miles Heizer, Devin Druid, Annie Winters, Tommy Dorfman, Brian D’Arcy James, Sosie Bacon, Steven Weber and Samantha Logan. 13 Reasons Why is written, created and produced by showrunner Brian Yorkey, with executive producers Selena Gomez, Mandy Teefey, Kristel Laiblin, Steve Golin and Joy Gorman.

All thirteen episodes of 13 Reasons Why hits Netflix internationally on May 18th.
