Our next movie-bucket-list-poster film is what many movie buffs consider a classic, but does some humour have an expiration date? Let’s run to our gate and catch a flight on the 1980’s film Airplane!
Now before we take flight on this hilarious movie, with a pretty well stocked cast if I do say so myself, let’s chat about the movie’s rating.
I’m more than positive this has probably been commented on since the movie’s take off in 1980. Maybe PG slid by in the 80s, this film today would be barely skidding past PG-13 and more likely be landed in a rated R setting due to its sexual content, and let’s not forget (spoiler alert) the alarmingly surprising graphic nudity just randomly placed in the movie.
In all honesty, I am not a fan of nudity in movies. I don’t think it’s necessary or adds any concreteness to the plot, and in this case, it is definitely just an extremely crude joke for an older audience – certainly not a PG crowd. Also branching off that, some of the humour and jokes displayed in Airplane! are a little stuck in their time, and not appropriate now as it was over looked then. Not only with its crudeness and inappropriately sexual bits, but it also has some jokes that flirt with the border of acceptable and racist.
But, there isn’t all bad to this classic, I enjoyed quite a lot of it! There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, timeless quotes, and I’m sure you’d have to watch the movie more than once to catch all its clever puns. With this movies witty and fast-paced humour, groovy music, goofy sound effects, and cheesy violence, it’s no wonder so many consider this a classic comedy.
Now here’s the tough part, and partially why I took so long to write this article: the final score. Though with all its positives and hilarious moments, I just can’t get passed those striking moments, it really put a damper on my experience of watching this. Of course, some out there may totally disagree (which of course is fine) and some may be relieved to read this, but before we score, let’s highlight some golden parts:
And now, with great anticipation I give this film 5 pilot’s wings out of 10. As I said above, I really love the fast pace comedy and all the puns, but there were large elements of inappropriateness I just couldn’t over look. And to our left you can find our scratch off movie poster image!
The recipe for Airplane! is: Bell bottom pants, lots of little free flowers, one blowup auto pilot, airplane tickets, neckties, and but of course fish diner.
